Costa Rica occupies approximately 20,000 square miles including several islands on the Pacific, which is about 200 miles long and as narrow as 70 miles in width. There is a well-traveled Pacific side and somewhat desolate Caribbean side.
The Central Valley is home to nearly three quarters of the Costa Rican population. The four other regions of the country include the Northern Central Plains, Northwest Nicoya Peninsula, and Tropical Lowlands on both coasts.
The Costa Rican provinces are Alajuela, Cartago, Guanacaste, Heredia, Puntarenas, Limon and San Jose.
