Costa Rican Government NO MILITARY!! The men say they are too busy making love to fight. Costa Rica’s government has been a neutral democracy for nearly half a century. For that time since 1948 they have done without a standing army. The have three branches of government as in the United States and president and legislators are eligible to hold office for one term. President Oscar Arias was awarded the Nobel Peace prize for brokering a peace accord in the late 80’s between warring factions in neighboring countries. He was recently reelected to the presidency. However, nepotism does exist along with other forms of corruption such as bribery. Government offices are not run efficiently and give a sense of extraordinary bureaucracy. |
